Seems like Kunaal is beginning his career with a laugh fest. Promotion of his debut film as a director, THE PRESIDENT IS COMING, has kick started and it appears that this November, audience would be subjected to yet another comedy fare, though in English language.

"True, the film is an out and out comedy. It is entirely in English because the play too has been in the same language. When adapting it as a feature film, there was no point in making the language as Hindi since it would have been quite a difficult and not–so–rewarding task. The reference points would have lost their meaning while humor would have lost its edge. Things would have gone awry since the entire style of the narrative would have gone wrong", says Kunaal about the reason behind making his first ever feature film in English.

Talking about the process of writing THE PRESIDENT IS COMING, Kunaal reveals, "The film is written by Anuvab Pal and I was involved from the very evolution of the film. We carried out a workshop and enjoyed getting the script in place for making it into the film. Anuvab has this obsession of making big deal about small things in life and the germ for THE PRESIDENT IS COMING too is his crazy idea. Once my name was thrown around for directing the film as well after the play, I was game for it."

The film releases at a time when the elections at US have already been held and a new President would be getting ready to occupy the chair.

"Yes, the film's release was planned to take place at a time when the world is aware about the exit of George Bush and Barack Obama coming in. Now, the relevance of film has been further amplified. Still, let me reiterate once again that though the film has an American theme, in its heart it is about six Indians and their hopes and aspirations."

The future of Indian cinema is finally here. In a futuristic move, Ramesh Sippy Entertainment (RSE) has decided to release their forthcoming movie, The President is Coming, exclusively on the 2K Digital Platform.

This means that no celluloid prints of this film will be distributed in Mumbai and will result in substantial savings on cost of release. The film will have prime show timings in all the screens and there will be no shuttling of prints. RSE is under contract with Scrabble Entertainment to use their wide Digital platform of 2K Digital Screens throughout India. Patrons will experience 2K Digital Image Quality which is the best in the world today.

The President is Coming is an English film and the first ever 'Mockumentary' about new India. It is a comedy about young India's ambitions and aspirations. With a style that is very tongue in cheek, the film takes a look at President George Bush' visit to India in 2006 where he wanted to shake hands with one young Indian under the age of 30.

Originally a play, written by Anuvab Pal and directed by Kunaal Roy Kapoor, this film is a humourous take on India Shining. It features 6 different characters who reflect the classic new India undergoing a gruesome contest to become the lucky winner to shake the President's hand.

Anuvab Pal has earlier co written the critically acclaimed Loins Of Punjab. Kunaal Roy Kapoor debuts as a feature film director with this film. He has earlier directed the original play.

The film's cast includes Konkona Sen Sharma and Shernaz Patel who are new to the project whereas the other cast including Ira Dubey, Vivek Gomber, Satchit Puranik, Namit Das, Anand Tiwari and Shivani Tanksale have all been part of the original play.

Says producer Rohan Sippy, "It is wonderful to be the first producer to put true digital cinema before an Indian audience- from acquisition all the way to flawless projection of the final image. Our comedy is a fresh take on 'India Shining', which makes it an even better association with Scrabble and a technology that is bound to fundamentally change not only the viewer's experience, but transform the films we make and the way we make them."

Ranjit Thakur, CEO - Scrabble Entertainment adds, "This move by RSE will create a new revolution in Indian Cinema. The 2K Platform will enable them to release the film at zero print cost and also enhance the Box Office collections as it will get Prime show timings in all screens. The patrons will be privileged to see the film in the World's best image resolution: 2K."

SYNOPSIS

In 2006, George Bush, President of The United States, visited India. In addition to the many diplomatic and political things on the agenda was a rather unique event - a meeting with one of the young faces responsible for shaping "The New India".

This is a fact. The rest is fiction.

The US Consulate hires a PR agency that “knows America” to find 1 young Indian to be the face of the New India before The American President. The agency brings in 6 Young Indians who have been listed in India Today magazine (the biggest English-language weekly in the country) as the “top Indian achievers under 30”.

The winner is to be selected in a day through a round of bizarre tests that get progressively tougher in a room in the US Consulate. The President will shake their hand among a long line of waiting Indian luminaries, the next day.

Each is desperate to win and will resort to any means to do so.

BACKGROUND

Close on the heels of the success of “Loins of Punjab Presents”, writer Anuvab Pal adapts his uproarious satirical play "The President is Coming". Starring some of the brightest young talent from the Mumbai theatre scene, and directed by Kunaal Roy Kapur, the play has had close to 20 shows since its opening early this year, establishing itself as the comic stage event of the year.

The adaptation to film is also a comment on two issues that obsess the world today - American influence globally, and the rise of modern India. The visit of George Bush thus becomes a larger metaphor to understand the dynamic of a young ambitious country while exploring hilarious and relevant notions of what America stands for, and does, in the world today.

“The cast is terrific…Enjoyable watch”
- Times of India

“Playwright Anuvab Pal’s entertaining comedy draws the guffaws… ”
"The plays facile humour is also laced with irony and wit – after a first half of jibes at the US, the jokes take on satirical overtones.”
- Hindustan Times

“Pal’s satire is refreshingly witty and sharp lends itself well to the stage with an intelligent mix of action, pace and dialogues.”
“Kunaal Roy Kapur’s treatment of the play is bright stylish and slick…..high dose of entertainment…succeeds in making the audience have a great time."
“The effort is laudable for its subversion and its potential to spark very pertinent debates."
